Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC)

ADEC is an organization in the field of dying, death and bereavement.
ADEC’s members consist of mental and medical health personnel, educators,
clergy, funeral directors, and volunteers. ADEC offers numerous educational
opportunities through its annual conference, courses and workshops,
and its new certification program in thanatology: death, dying, and
bereavement. This certificate program is recommended for persons who
have a bachelors degree and at least two years of experience in a
related field OR those with a masters or doctorate degree and
one year of experience in a related field.
ADEC, with collaboration of several other organizations, now offer
a new on-line national public education course "Finding
Our Way: Living with Dying in America" ( www.scu.edu/fow).
“Finding Our Way” explores end-of-life issues. This course if free
to the public. All the material can be found on the website. The course
can be completed at one’s own pace and convience.
There are several educational CD ROMS that can be ordered.

Sturbridge Group offers several different types of bereavement training.
Some seminars include:
The Sturbridge Group can also create custom seminar for specific organization
to meet the needs of the organization while incorporating the mission
of the Sturbridge Group. Some examples of seminars they have created
are:
- A workshop on suicide prevention and bereavement for an HIV
support organization that had experienced the suicide of several
clients.
- A workshop on dealing with personal feelings of loss for staff
at a cancer support organization.
- A program for parents and teachers on suicide awareness and
grief reactions after the suicide of a student at a local high
school.
- A workshop on dealing with bereavement issues in college age
students for the clinical staff of a university counseling service.
- A presentation on coping with grief during the holidays for
employees of a high tech firm with several losses during the previous
year.
- A discussion of loss issues and ways to provide mutual support
for a church congregation with multiple losses in a short period
of time.
- A workshop for supervisory staff at a home health agency on
how to help line staff deal with grieving clients, and with their
own experience of work-related loss.

The Dougy Center offers a wide variety of workshops and training sessions
on helping grieving children. The program development trainings have
helped start over 130 centers nationally and internationally. They
also provide educational workshops for those working with grieving
children in hospitals, schools, hospices, youth service organizations
and mental health agencies across the nation.

Madonna University: Certificate in Bereavement

This graduate certificate can be obtained on-line. This certificate
is recommended for students who wish to supplement an existing graduate
degree in counseling, psychology, or social work (or related degree)
with clinical knowledge and expertise in their work with grieving
persons and families. It is also available as a cognate for student
pursuing the master’s degree in hospice education at Madonna University.
One must complete the following three classes to satisfy the requirements
for this certificate.
- Grieving Family Systems
- Complicated Grief and Related Disorders
- Developing Comprehensive Bereavement Programs

Bereavement Education is offered by the Canadian Centre for Advanced
Training (CCAT) in conjunction with The Canadian Centre for Bereavement
Education.
Classes are held on weekends in Toronto. An entire course is covered
in two 6-hour sessions held that particular weekend. The different
